Carol Jowdy

Carol Jowdy, AKA ‘Sky’ is a landscape painter and received her MFA at University of Pennsylvania. She has been on faculty in the Art Department at Plymouth State University since 1994.

Carol’s love of nature and desire to make a difference on the planet drove her to study Sustainable Landscape Design at The Landscape Institute of Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University where she earned a graduate degree. She has been designing and installing landscapes in the Lakes Region and central New Hampshire since 2004.

Carol promotes intelligent land use and ecologically sound Best Management Practices (BMP) into her work. She teaches ‘Native Knowledge’ and sustainable practices to children in local schools, with environmental organization, non-profits, community groups, and with students at Plymouth State University (PSU).

An educator at heart, Carol includes Green Initiatives and Sustainable Design in her work that includes storm water management alternatives, creative water harvesting, invasive species management, land conservation, permaculture, biodynamic agriculture and she creates conditions that support  health, happiness and productivity.

Carol lives in a solar powered home in Sandwich, NH where she intends to showcase her native gardens and food production as a model. Her dreams include cultivating a native nursery on her land and launching a foundation to support future generations of artist/designers. When not at work, Carol enjoys a healthy outside life of hiking, skiing, swimming, paddling, painting, yoga and pondering the deeper meaning of life.

Philosophy

Environmental Responsibility and Sustainable Design Development form the matrix of Carol Jowdy Landscape Design (CJLD).

Carol’s holistic approach integrates structure with the character of the site to maintain ‘A Sense of Place’.

Low Impact Design (LID) preserves the integrity of your land by weaving existing features with design development.

Working with dynamics of your land, CJLD considers sun, slope, wind and water,  soils, structure, microclimates, natural and cultural features that shape the space.

Native plant diversity, soil fertility, and smart water management work in concert to create low maintenance, self sustaining design.

Carol’s landscapes are defined by an integration of shape and structure, color, texture, height, focal point, movement and destination, for all season interest.

CJLD offers creative alternatives to lawn while promoting biodiversity to attract birds, butterflies, and other pollinating species.

Carol promotes Permaculture (permanent agriculture) that supports annual and perennial food production.

Carol believes in the power of Healing, Meditation, and Memory gardens and can provide one upon request in appropriate settings.

Mimicking native communities in a systems approach of ‘Right Plant- Right Place’ helps initiate healthy, self-sustaining, livable landscapes.

Acknowledging the past, responding to the present, and creating a template for the future, CJLD shapes living landscapes into outdoor rooms to inspire human interaction with the natural world.
